Therapy for Depression

Evidence-based therapy for depression

When depression is hard to name

Depression does not always look like constant sadness. It can show up as emotional heaviness, numbness, low motivation, or feeling disconnected from yourself or others. For many people, depression is less about feeling down and more about feeling stuck, flat, or exhausted, whereby they are going through the motions while not attaching emotionally to experiences.

Many individuals experiencing depression are still functioning at work or in relationships, which can make it harder to recognize what is happening or ask for support.

How depression often shows up

Depression may manifest in the following ways:

  • Low energy or motivation, even for things that once mattered

  • Feeling emotionally numb, flat, or disconnected

  • Increased self-criticism or hopelessness

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Withdrawal from relationships or activities

  • A sense of heaviness or emotional fatigue

Why depression makes sense

Depression often develops in response to prolonged stress, loss, unmet needs, trauma, or feeling overwhelmed for too long. It emerges when an individual has been pushing through, prioritizing responsibility over rest or emotional processing.

Rather than signifying a personal failure, depression is often a signal that something important needs attention, whether that is grief, burnout, disconnection, or an accumulation of unaddressed experiences.

How therapy can help

In my practice, therapy for depression focuses on understanding what is contributing to low mood and helping you reconnect with yourself, your values, and your capacity for engagement. Rather than forcing positivity or productivity, the work involves gently increasing awareness, flexibility, and responsiveness to what you are experiencing.

Change happens gradually through both insight and small, meaningful shifts in how you relate to your thoughts, emotions, and daily life.

Therapeutic targets

Our work together may emphasize any of the following areas:

  • Identifying patterns that contribute to low mood or withdrawal

  • Exploring self-critical thinking and emotional shutdown

  • Increasing emotional awareness and tolerance

  • Reconnecting with values, meaning, and motivation

  • Building routines or actions that support mood and energy

  • Addressing underlying grief, trauma, or relational factors

Approach

Together, we identify unhelpful thought and behavior patterns and develop manageable steps to increase engagement and momentum. We work on staying connected to what matters most to you, so gradual movement toward greater clarity, connection, and vitality becomes possible.
